6 Exciting New Things To See At The 2022 Calgary Stampede

Calgary Stampede is the greatest outdoor show on earth, yet in the last two years, the number of western heritage celebrators on the stampede grounds has been sparse due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, this year is a game-changer for the over one million visitors expected because Calgary Stampede is back in full swing! I am excited to see Blake Shelton and all the other bands and artists that will be performing this year. The actual stampede event is slated for Fri, July 8th – Sun, July 17th. So let’s hit you up on what’s new at the 2022 Calgary Stampede.

The Superwheel

North America’s most giant traveling Ferris wheel is coming to the midway! If you want a skyline view of the stampede premises, you need to hop on this 150-foot soaring super wheel.

The Chuckwagon Racing is New Back

The Cowboys Rangeland Derby chuckwagon races are back this year! The race is one of the rodeo events at the Calgary Stampede. It takes place nightly in 9 heats at 7:45 pm. Watch as 27 chuckwagon riders compete for prize money and champion-boasting rights. Having been canceled in the last two years due to Covid, it’s a relief and a thrill to have it back in this year’s Calgary Stampede.

A Powwow Competition

The elbow river camp features powwow demonstrations. The powwow demonstrations are a celebration of North America’s indigenous culture. Calgary stampede powwow competition is one of the new features you can expect to see this year. It is scheduled for July 12th - 14th at the Scotiabank Saddledome. It will feature the best indigenous dancing, drumming, and singing. Feel the party atmosphere as you watch indigenous dancers compete in colorful regalia.

Rocky Mountain Cup Team Roping Competition

Do you know how ranchers had to team up to rope cattle? Yeah, so this is the sport. You can enjoy the first-ever roping championship at the 2022 Calgary Stampede! Watch the world’s best cowboy teams show off their calf roping skills as they compete for cash prizes.

The Griffon Helicopter

According to a recent report by CTV News, a royal Canadian Airforce helicopter will be flying over at the start of the Calgary Stampede. The aircraft is scheduled to fly three trips from Calgary’s stampede park to the YYC Calgary International Airport. Expect to see it on Thursday, July 7th from 9:30 pm - 10:30 pm, Friday, July 8th from 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm, and 6:30 - 8:30 pm.

A Drag Brunch

Still unsure about attending? It would be best if you weren’t because the drag brunch will be a fun way to experience Calgary stampede this year. It’s a first-ever drag brunch, and you don’t want to miss it. It will take place on July 17th at Nashville North by 11:00 am. Nicky Doll from season 12 of RuPaul’s Drag Race will be headlining this event.
