Fresh Look at Dating: Navigating the Beige Flags

Many of you are familiar with "red flags" and "green flags" in relationships. These terms typically indicate potential problems or positives to look out for when dating. But what about "beige flags?" Initially, a beige flag was a sign on a person's dating profile that they might be a tad "basic." Think pineapple on pizza debates or sitcom references. It's nothing negative, just potentially a little on the predictable side.

There's a new term that's been making the rounds in the dating world: beige flags. This term, initially introduced by Caitlin MacPhail (@itscaito) in 2022, has since taken social media, particularly TikTok, by storm. With the hashtag #beigeflag amassing over 269.6 million views and counting, it's clear that this is a trend we should all be aware of.

However, the definition of "beige flags" has evolved. Today, it also describes somewhat peculiar things your partner or friend does. These characteristics aren't necessarily negative or positive but are unique to that individual. This could be your partner snoozing their alarm 5 times before they wake up every day, their not using words or phrases in the right context, having two sips of their iced coffee then leaving it out to melt- you get the idea.

Interestingly, beige flags have become a testament to how unconditional love can be. Your beige flags are part of who you are, and if your partner celebrates all your quirks and characteristics equally, that's a sign of genuine acceptance and love

The emergence of the beige flag trend aligns with several other dating trends we've observed in 2023. For instance, budget-conscious dates have become more popular, with many singles becoming more apparent in their financial boundaries when it comes to dating. A representative from Bumble shared that 28% of users surveyed are starting to establish economic boundaries when it comes to dating, and 57% prefer a more low-key, less costly date.

Moreover, non-monogamy is rising, with 15% of Gen Z Hinge users and those identifying as LGBTQ+ exploring or open to non-monogamy. More women are making the first move in dating, a trend likely to continue, while the concept of sober dates is gaining traction, with many preferring shared activities that boost a sense of connection. Finally, "situationships" (unofficial relationships) are becoming more accepted, signaling a shift in how we perceive and navigate relationships.

These trends, including the beige flag phenomenon, reflect a shift towards authenticity, self-awareness, and open-mindedness in dating. As we navigate our dating journeys, let's celebrate our beige flags and those of our partners. After all, these flags represent the unique traits that make us who we are. So, the next time you're swiping or meeting someone new, remember to look out for those beige flags and embrace them. They may lead you to the unconditional love you're seeking.

Until next time, happy dating!
